Weet-Bix For Dinner

Dream living is a pretty romantic thing to do. Quit your job, move somewhere beautiful, make a go at something big (or small, whatever takes your fancy).

There are a few things you’ll need to sacrifice though: Money is one, food is proving to be another. New clothes are something fanciful to day dream of and petrol in the car is becoming something of a luxury.

Tonight is Sunday. In my family, that means a baked dinner and between twenty and thirty people around the table with more food than forty could eat. My Mum’s philosophy is that she’d rather have too much than not enough. She figures out what everyone will eat and makes double (at least). We live three hours from home, so the baked wasn’t an option.

Kesh and I settled for Weet-Bix, with milk and sugar. Mine were warm from the microwave and Kesh’s were cold. That’s how we like ‘em.

Lucky we don’t care much for new clothes and we can live without a full petrol tank. We have a big blue roof over our heads, enough food to keep our bellies full and most of all, I look forward to what the new day brings.

Some people would say Weet-Bix for dinner isn’t romantic at all. I know two humans who disagree.

  1. I remember reading this post when you first wrote it. It's so beautifully written and poignant. I'm so happy for the both of you and all you've achieved. When I left to go overseas my mum gave me some great advice: "Throw your heart out in front of you, and run ahead to catch it." and I think you are a living example of this. You get it. A ton of money and 'things' mean nothing in the grand scheme of things if you aren't happy and emotionally fulfilled. You took a chance on something you believed in, with the support of somebody who wholeheartedly believes in you, and you made it. You really made it, and I'm very proud of you.
