OSLO, NORWAY | LOVE, THE COULSON'S

Kesh was scared of flying before she met me. Then, we flew a whole bunch and the fear left. Today, it came back though. The pilot warned us of the anticipated turbulence before we left the ground and Kesh started to feel nervous. Mid ascent, she told me to hold her hand and asked me to talk to her about anything.

I asked her what she thought our regular hang out would be if we moved to New York. She told me it would be Eataly and within seconds, we were talking about the Prime Rib Roll that changed my life and hers.

Kesh's anxiety left and she reminded herself that we've taken somewhere in the vicinity of 60 flights together.

While I type, we're flying over Denmark, out of Oslo and into Paris. I'm sitting in the row in front of Kesh and Roo and their heads keep popping over the head rests, filled with smiles. And we're talking about moving to New York. It's the city I can't get out of my mind.

We're considering entering the lottery for a Visa, so I can work in the States for a little while. Maybe six months, maybe a year, maybe more. And maybe not at all. But maybe. For me, life is possibility.

Oslo was beautiful. We caught trains and buses and walked a whole bunch. I'm kinda bummed we didn't get out of the city and north to the crazy fjords that I dreamt of but I've vowed to come back and do Norway properly. I've also been shooting film, which won't be blogged until we get home (so I can get it scanned) so here's what I shot on my digital gear.

  2. tim i was just thinking about how it feels like we're friends. you put into words things i think all the time. your family is beautiful, your pursuit is beautiful, and your images are beautiful. i'm from centerville so we do have a few friends in common, like clark walker and tyler andrews. also, i believe we have a few australian friends/acquaintances in common as well. enjoy paris!

  5. Oh I am SO excited to see your film photos…I’ll be they will be incredible Tim. You are so true about living the dream, it’s all about visualisation and action, if you can see yourself doing it, you can do it as far as I’m concerned!

My husband has lived a simialr journey to yours, believing he could live his dream, be his own boss and run his own business. Now, together we are moving our family to a place we want, to live how we want and hopefully one day travel and take our children to many a beautiful place. Bless you Coulson Family x

You and Kesh have always been so incredibly humbled by the opportunities that have come to you but you have worked so very hard for them. Suck the marrow out of this life brilliant people! :) xx

  18. I particularly love the wide view shot of Kesh and Roo in stroller, hand on her head, fence and beautiful house behind her. A close up wouldn't have the same impact, and if they weren't in the shot it would only be environment. You do environmental portraiture exceedingly well.

  20. And my lovely Kesh, for the record, I've literally been on hundreds of flights and I still get butterflies each and every single time. I'm better when I'm with my kids, but struggle on my own.

  24. you really think everybody has the same chance of living his/her dream as some white dude from australia, who, obviously, was raised by a loving family and all? think again.

    1. I really do. And another thing I believe really strongly is that your skin colour doesn't make you a success. Black or white. If you've got the drive, nothing is impossible.

      Delete
    2. i don't think skin colour doesn't matter either, but as a white, educated male in the western world you get tons of potential success points just for being born. i know that it takes courage to live like you do (i was also raised very well and am not all all as adventurous and often amazed by your schedule), but i genuinely don't think everybody has that chance. in the end it sounds like 'they are not trying enough', which is (not always) the reason for living a life that's different to your own. maybe in the western world.
it's good that you can live the life you want. and i'm sure you've earned it. it's special anyway that work+ determination pay off.

      Delete
    3. I definitely agree with a lot of what you say. I just want to clarify that what I said was anyone is capable of living their dream. Not that it's equally possible, or equally as simple - just that it's possible. And like I said, I believe in possibility.

I'm really sorry for my tone, if it sounded in any way like there are people in the world not trying enough. That is not my belief at all. I know that my life has been blessed beyond comprehension and that's something I'm eternally grateful for.

I guess what I'm really trying to say is that if you have a dream (and I don't even know that everyone does) you should go for it. Maybe I should have said it like that, rather than the way I did.

I really appreciate your input though. Thanks so much.

  29. So beautiful. The pictures, the words. The way you squeeze everything from life is truly an inspiration Tim. And Kesh. I'm obsessed with that black dress you're wearing. I've been searching for a dress like that with sleeves FOREVER!! Where oh where did you find it? x

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh, tim. I like you so much. But implying that anyone could be traveling the world with a gorgeous wife and adorable baby and doing their dream job... if they just took action... can't be what you truly believe. There is far too much suffering and injustice in the world to think that. People suffering cancer, abuse, intractable poverty... men working 80 hour weeks for minimum wage just to feed their children... It isn't just because they failed to dream or take action. Life is unequal. That's a fact. But that doesn't detract from the offering of beauty, light, and joy through art like yours.

  41. Fantastic post, thanks for sharing. Finding a wedding photographer can be a hard task. Many people only look for cheap wedding photographers; of course they end up saving some money, but this more often than not comes at a high price. Of course, nobody will know what this high price was until at least a month after the wedding. Beware of minimal wedding quotations... More often than not they are at the base of a photography disaster.Adelaide Wedding Photographer

  46. Excellent post really important for us. Finding a good photographer is not very hard. Wedding and bridal shows are wonderful places to get names and pricing information. Bridal magazines are another good place to look. Asking a friend who has had a wedding recently is an excellent way to not only find a photographer, but get a referral as well. You can also find listings for photographers in the yellow pages, but use this only to get a listing. Never hire someone without checking them out first.Adelaide Wedding Photographer
