THE NURSERY WORKSHOP TOUR 2013 | LONDON | SYD | MELB | ADEL

Teaching has become a big part of what I do. Last year I ran twelve workshops and I'm pretty sure that I learnt more than the beautiful people who came to learn from me. I love these workshops. I have faith in them and their ability to help you become a better photographer.

See below for all the details.

The Nursery is a single day photography workshop that finds and fosters the creative photographer within all of us. The workshop is tailored for amateur and beginner photographers and focuses on:

1. Emotional shooting: learning how to connect with your subject.

2. Technical shooting: understanding the principles of creating your own exposure through shooting on manual.

3. Live shoot: using your new skill set and a chance to shoot one on one with me.

4. Workflow: learning what to do with your images once you get home (culling, editing, exporting for web/print, archiving).

You'll need a DSLR to attend. The workshop runs for one day, from 10am - 4:30pm and is being offered on either a Friday or Saturday. The London workshop will be run on a Wednesday. Workshops are limited to twelve attendees.

Cost is $440.

SOME FAVOURITES FROM NOOSA

In winter, when I was on the other side of the country to Kesh and Roo, I promised myself I wouldn't travel without them - not even one more time. I drove around towns I didn't know, bleary eyed into the night, so I wouldn't have to lay in that motel room alone.

There's something so special when Kesh is with me. And now Rooza, too.

We ran a few more workshops in Queensland this past week. One in Brisbane and another in Noosa. I pretty much had no spare time but I always try to shoot with Kesh and Roo. We've run eight workshops now and Kesh and Roo haven't missed one.

Here are a few from our time in Noosa.

That image third from the bottom is really special for me. I'm sure you guys can figure out why...

THE NURSERY | MELBOURNE WRAP UP

The three sessions of the nursery here in Melbourne are a wrap. We're done and they're finished. Kesh and I got to meet more than 30 new friends and we are so grateful for that.

I love doing these workshops. Mainly because I remember what it was like to be a proper amateur, a true beginner and completely confused when it came to aperture, shutter speeds, light meters, ISO, what lens to buy, which camera to use, how to edit...

I have joked with my attendees that if they saw my images on the first day I decided to shoot on manual, they wouldn't believe they were mine. They really were that bad. But when I see the images our attendees produce, I feel like this is something that is really worthwhile.

If you want to attend one of my workshops before the year is over, the only place with availability is Hobart on Oct 27. Just shoot me an email and we can book you in.

I just wanted to send a massive shout out to our hostess with the most-ess (that sounds better when you say it out loud). Kirsty is one of the most generous and kind people I have ever met and I'm so grateful that she is part of our lives. Nothing, I mean nothing, was too much for her. In fact, her generosity was almost too much for me! Kirsty - thank you so much for everything you did to make these workshops happen.

My little sister, Rach, came and modelled for all three session. Thanks, sis!

THE NURSERY WORKSHOP TOUR | QLD | TAS | NSW | SA | WA | NZ

the nursery is officially heading on tour. We have another workshop here in Gerringong in September, then we head to Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Hobart in October, before heading to Canberra,  Adelaide, Perth and New Zealand in 2013. See the image above for dates/locations.

I've been receiving a lot of emails with questions about what this workshop is and isn't. I've tried to answer some of those questions below.

What is the nursery?

the nursery is a single day photography workshop that finds and fosters the creative photographer within all of us. The workshop is built for amateur photographers and focuses on:

How much does it cost?

$380

Do I need a DSLR to attend?

Yes. At the very least you need a camera that allows you to completely control shutter speed, aperture and ISO.

Am I classified as an amateur photographer?

So long as you don't have a photography business, you're welcome to attend this workshop.

Are you coming to my city?

At the moment, we have plans to run workshops in the USA (Los Angeles, Utah, New York) in mid 2013.

Can I read a review of someone who has attended?

Jodi wrote a review that you can read here.

THE NURSERY | TOUR DATES COMING SOON

On Saturday, I ran another session of the nursery in our home.

I flippin' love these workshops.

For me, seeing a group of people, who've never shot on manual, running around on a hill top in gale force winds, loving what they are capturing - that's one of the best things ever. Armed with new knowledge about aperture, shutter speed, ISO, bokeh and a whole lot more, the excitement of those first manual exposures get me every time.

I'm starting to see that the nursery empowers people. It makes something that seemed impossible very achievable. The images that I've seen rolling through from my attendees are seriously blowing my mind. After one day, one week, one month. The standard or work is really amazing.

Today, Kesh and I will be sitting down to plan a national and international tour for the nursery. We will be visiting most capital cities in Australia, before shooting over to New Zealand and then heading to the Northern Hemisphere.

Our itinerary will be on the blog in the coming days. We'll be creating a new section on the website for the nursery tour. If you want to know our travels before anyone else, email Kesh - hello@timcoulson.com and let her know your closest city. We'll send out the details to those on our mailing list, before details are published here.

A massive thank you to Gaby, who modelled for us in some of the most insane shooting conditions I've ever been in.

Hope to see you guys somewhere on the road.

THE NURSERY | A REVIEW

I never thought I would be a teacher. My Mum always told me I didn't have the patience required to educate others. Probably because I only ever tried teaching when it was forced upon me. Most times, it was me, the piano and someone who wanted to learn Smoke on the Water - I was classically trained.

At those times, I lacked patience and the student (normally a friend or family member) continued their disassociation with the ivories.

Things have changed though. They've changed because I have found something I'm passionate about sharing with the world.

I've developed a workshop called the nursery. I teach people how to use their DSLR as it was intended. I teach people the importance of creating an emotional connection in order to capture real emotion in their frames. The best part is, I teach people who have never shot on anything other than the automatic setting.

Last week, a new group of ten beautiful people came into my home. They met my wife and my son. They sat in our chairs and humbly, I taught them what I've come to learn on my photographical journey.

My amazing friend, Annette Wilson, made a short film. She captured, perfectly, the essence of the day.

Another beautiful friend, Jodi, modeled for our live shoot and the images below were taken while I talked the attendees through my process for shooting portraits. Jodi also wrote a review of what it's like to attend the nursery. You should definitely click through - she has a very special way with words.

the nursery is set to visit every capital city over the next twelve months. If you'd like to come along, email me at hello@timcoulson.com

In the coming days, I'll be creating a new section on the website with upcoming dates and locations so you can see when I'll be in your city.

*I still have 2 spaces for Sep 15 and Sep 17 at the nursery in Melbourne.

THE NURSERY | MELBOURNE DATES

The Nursery is taking a road trip. Kesh, Roo and me will be heading to Melbourne in September to run three workshops.

And we've pretty much sold out the first two...

When I first decided to teach what I've learnt over the past year, the response blew me away. We started a mailing list and the people on that list get first dibs on spaces, so if you want to make sure you get the opportunity to attend, email Kesh and let her know where you are. We'll be heading to most capital cities over the next 12 months.

Here are the dates for Melbourne:

- Friday, September 14 (three places left)
- Saturday, September 15 (full)
- Monday, September 17 (I've only just decided to run this date so it's wide open at the moment)

The Nursery is tailored for anyone who owns a DSLR but only shoots with it on auto. There is so much potential within all those dials and buttons and this workshop arms you with the knowledge you need to finally understand how to create an exposure. Shooting manual ain't as scary as it seems. Trust me.
Here are the details again:

We'll spend the day covering what has helped me achieve the things I have in the last year:

Emotional Shooting - Why I believe connecting with your subject will help you take better photos than any camera.
Technical Shooting - Learning how to shoot on manual and control your exposure. F stops, shutter speeds, aperture and all the rest.
Practical Shooting - A real live shoot using your new found knowledge.
Theory - Culling, editing and workflow.
Q&A - Ask me anything. Seriously.

The Nursery will be held in Balwyn North, VIC, starting at 10am, finishing at 5pm. We will be hosted by one of the most generous and kind people I have ever met, Kirsty, from Kootoyoo.

It's going to cost you $380 to attend and payment is required to secure your place.

This is not a workshop for professional photographers. This is a workshop for people who love photography, own a DSLR and don't know how to use it but want to learn.

THE NURSERY | A PEOPLE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP | NEW DATES

I know you must have been hoping for a birth announcement but as I type this, Kesh is still completely pregnant (we aren't due until Sunday). She's flicking through a magazine while cringing at The Voice.

But in other awesome news, we're announcing two more dates for The Nursery. The sessions will be run in NSW (in our home). If you live in another state, please register your interest by emailing Kesh and we'll let you know when we're heading your way.

The first session we ran sold out in a matter of hours, so we've decided to run two Saturday sessions on:

- Saturday, August 4
- Saturday, August 11

For me, the best part of our first Nursery was the live shoot. To see people, who were so scared of their cameras and the idea of shooting on manual that same morning, running around in the forest with huge smiles because they actually created an exposure that worked was inspiring. It reminded me of what it means to be able to create.

If you're scared of your camera, if you don't shoot on anything but auto, if you don't get aperture...this is the workshop to change your photographical journey.

Here are the details again:
